So, you’re frustrated, frustration can be a sign that you’re off track. You worked tirelessly on this project only to find that when it launched, there were several other projects out there similar to yours. Everyone seems to be doing the same thing. No matter how much market research you do chances are someone is doing something similar. Don’t get frustrated because the reality is although similar, no one can do exactly what you do. You are a unique individual or company and there is something different about what you do some aspect, twist, or creative difference that only you can give to your projects, articles, blog posts, products or services. No one can beat you at being you so move forward with that thought in mind.
Frustration may be a sign that you’re too close to the forest to see the trees, so to speak. In other words your perspective may be blurred, you’ve gotten off track. So how do you get back on track?
Three things That Can Help You Get Back on Track:
1) Step away – every now and then you need to step away to gain fresh perspective. You just may be too close to the situation to truly give it your best critique.
2) Reward yourself – each program, post, article, video, etc. completed give yourself some type of reward. It doesn’t have to be anything big but it should make you smile and feel happy.
3) Affirm yourself – Speak words of encouragement and affirmation don’t wait for others to cheer you on cheer yourself. Write words of encouragement that you want to remember on an index card for daily reading.
“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” I Samuel 30:6
Why is this important?
It will prevent burnout, each time you produce something you are giving of yourself, mentally, physically and spiritually. Giving is a great thing but it was designed as only one side of a full circle, where there is giving there should also be receiving. In today’s fast paced environment where everyone is an expert at something, it is easy to become frustrated as you review your creative content next to some other experts creative content. You may be so close to your creation emotionally that it suffers by comparison when it really may just be different, not better nor worse than someone else’s. I could say that it’s not good to compare but I’d be wasting my time most people already know that but comparing is hard to avoid and it may be necessary.
Let’s face it, the best rewards are positive feedback to your content, a comment on your blog or a product or service purchased, but if that doesn’t happen immediately or even if it does give yourself a reward for generating the content. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it could be a piece of your favorite candy or points added to a point system that will help you accomplish some larger personal goal. Don’t wait for others to reward you first, reward yourself.
You’ve put in your time, talent and treasury, your mind, body and spirit, the reward will help you to continue to move forward. Always remember to be thankful, acknowledge God for giving you the capabilities you’ve been blessed with. Sometimes we expect immediate gratification but some things require patience. Do what you can to reward yourself don’t allow frustration to discourage you from pursuing your God given dream.
